A Master Mariner, with an engineering, computing and business background, who has been involved in the superyacht industry since 1989 when, following what was supposed to be a short sabbatical, he took command of his first yacht, a Swan 57 sailing yacht owned by Computacenter PLC who he had been working for – he founded and managed their multi-million Pound, Computer Aided Design (CAD) division.
In 2010, after nine years running the Feadship LADY MARINA, he decided to return to college, full-time for ten months, in Fremantle, Australia, to upgrade his qualifications to Master Unlimited; something he felt was unfinished business from his time in the merchant navy, and also because he saw a developing demand for captains with superyacht experience and commercial qualifications for the new breed of large superyachts that where becoming more common in or industry.
Armed with his upgraded qualification, he has been fortunate to sail on iconic yachts such as EQUANIMITY, SERENE, KATARA, ULYSSES, AVIVA (98m) and ECLIPSE.
Along with his business and maritime experience, Malcolm also provides yacht consultancy to owners and family offices though his company threesixtymarine.com
He has authored numerous articles on yachting, is an industry advocate and invited commentator and speaker.
With his experience spanning the whole spectrum of yachts, and building high performance teams, he has gained knowledge, insight and a unique perspective of the established recruitment process and human resource challenges.
Recognising that the traditional yacht recruitment firms often lack command or maritime experience, OnlyCaptains was launched with a goal to improve the recruitment and mentoring of talented yacht Captains and Deck Officers – tomorrows captains!
OnlyCaptains work with associate Captains and partners who share our core values – excellence, transparency, and commercial independence.
